About the Eureka Project (2004-2008)
eureka - the collection
Eureka: a British project bringing new design to the consumer
Named to represent the moment of inspiration that fuels the creative process, the Eureka Project is a Design-Nation
initiative that encourages British retailers and manufacturers to commission British designers. 'British' refers to people who live and work in the UK, it is not used in the sense of place of birth, or country of passport, rather in the sense of a shared culture that informs and inspires - bright, aesthetic and witty.
A new collection of products launches each September as part of the London Design Festival. The exhibition is an opportunity to see the outcome of the collaborations between designers, retailers and manufacturers, and the exhibition itself comprises the shortlist for the Eureka Design Award.
The new and more established that have particpated in Eureka are: Afroditi Krassa, Alison Milner, Andrew Tanner, Ane Christensen, bdm design, Chichi Cavalcanti, Chris Eckersley, Christiane Kersten, Ella Doran, Helen Yardley, Jackie Choi London, James Ryan, Jasper Startup, Jona Hoad, Julie Haslam, Katy Holford, Kay + Stemmer, Lucian Taylor, Margo Selby, Mark Gabbertas, Massimo Fenati, Michael Ruh, Michelle Mason, Miranda Watkins, People will always need plates, Rock Galpin, Tim Parsons and Timorous Beasties
Leading British retailers support our aim of raising the profile young or new design talent by participating in the Eureka Project. Retailers such as Crabtree & Evelyn, Designers Guild, Fired Earth Interiors, Heal's, John Lewis, The Conran Shop, Habitat, Southbank Centre Shop, Hector Finch Lighting, Royal Doulton, SCP, Wesley-Barrell, Wentworth Pewter, Christopher Wray Interiors, Paul Smith, Designers Guild, John Lewis Watts Contemporaries, Crabtree & Evelyn, Ercol, Neville Johnson, Fired Earth Interiors, Heal's and The Conran Shop have commissioned 28 designers to design 40 products in the first five years of the Project.
It is the intention of Eureka Project to encourage production to be done in the UK, and as far as possible the designs have been manufactured in Britain or by British companies with international operations. Whilst fully aware of the difficulties facing companies wishing to manufacture in the UK, we believe that it is important to attempt to do so.
